Ok don't remember where I read or heard this but I remember something about being able to repair the Gauss Rifle with scrap metal. I can't confirm this, you could try it out though.

Only merchants can repair this gun. Fortunately it doesn't degrade too quickly and you can get a fair few kills without having to repair it.

There's a glitch where you can get the Operation Anchorage items in the main game, and they have the "infinite" durability like the Winterized T51-b armour. You'd have to start Operation Anchorage all over (and have a save before it).

Plus, the Gauss Rifle has a decent sniper scope, but more importantly a knockdown effect on critical hits. In other words, if you've got the sniper, concentrated fire and finesse perks; you can drop an Overlord to the ground in VATS and then keep knocking him down as he tries to get back up.
