How much does it cost to replace harmonic balancer?

On average for most vehicles, it can cost about $200 to replace a harmonic balancer. The cost of replacing the harmonic balancer varies mainly due to the type and model of the vehicle and the type and brand of parts used. To illustrate, below are some specific estimated costs for some common vehicles using a labor rate of $100 per hour:

How to tell if harmonic balancer is bad?

  • The engine sounds are louder than usual and you feel abnormal vibrations coming from the engine.
  • The belt in the pulley might slip which will cause the vehicle to misfire or backfire.
  • The ignition timing in the vehicle will be off.
  • The vehicle might not start at all if the balancer is broken.

Does the harmonic balancer need replacing?

There is no fixed time for this but there are symptoms from which it can be inferred that the balancer needs a replacement. As time goes by, the harmonic balancer attached to the crankshaft can go bad due to continuous contact with chemicals, from other elements and/or from old age.

What are the symptoms of a bad harmonic balancer?

Symptoms of a bad harmonic balancer include but are not limited to, rough idle, a vibration at a particular RPM, or a vibration in the engine overall. Sometimes it can be undetected when driving, but will be visible when looking underhood at a running engine. It is just like having a wheel off balance, but it wont vary by speed but engine RPM.

Why there is rubber on harmonic balancer?

The harmonic balancer (also known as the crankshaft damper) is a round disc made of rubber and metal that absorbs vibrations caused by the engine cylinders' firing. It protects the crankshaft.

Does harmonic balancer affect timing?

Misaligned timing marks Another symptom of a potential problem with the harmonic balancer is misaligned timing marks.

Can I weld my harmonic balancer?

Welding the hub to the crank will almost certainly pass enough heat to the rubber portion of the balancer to damage it. Best to repair whatever situation is making you consider welding the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft.

Do you need a tool to install a harmonic balancer?

Proform Harmonic Balancer Installation Tools are used for installing the harmonic balancer. They use a pilot stud, which keeps the harmonic balancer perpendicular to the crankshaft's centerline, for a bind-free installation.

Are harmonic balancer supposed to wobble?

When the harmonic balancer is wobbling, it would be best not to run the engine. The harmonic balancers function is to counteract the vibrations in the engine so damage doesn't occur. When it fails, it can cause premature wear on the bearings, or lead to major engine damage.

How long should a harmonic balancer last?

On certain engines, sometimes these last forever, last the life of the engine. And certain engines they might only last 50,000 miles or less than 10 years.

Will harmonic balancer cause knock?

A faulty balancer can result in a knocking, rattling, or squeaking sound that corresponds with engine speed. In some cases, the noise is bad enough to be mistaken for an internal engine problem.

What happens if a harmonic balancer breaks?

Although the harmonic balancer may seem simple enough, if it fails, it can cause major problems. Without the balancer dampening unwanted crankshaft vibrations, engine failures, such as worn rod bearings and a broken crankshaft, may result. A faulty balancer can damage the belt and engine-driven accessories as well.

How to remove harmonic damper?

The first step is to remove the harmonic damper with the proper tool, known as a puller. This tool works like most pullers attaching to the harmonic balancer with bolts. During operation, the puller employs a jackscrew complete with a protection plate that pushes the balancer off. You never want to pry a harmonic balancer off the crankshaft. Many engines built over the last 20 years do not use a keyway in the balancer and crankshaft snout. This design is just an interference fit, and its use is based on the accessory load that is run from the crankshaft pulley.

What happens if the timing cover seal is worn?

An all-too-common mistake when changing a front timing cover seal is not inspecting the hub of the harmonic balancer for wear. It may be hard to believe, but the seal can actually cut a small groove into the hub of the balancer. When this happens and the new seal is installed, ...

Can you damage a crankshaft by ramming it against its end?

You will most likely damage the balancer and injure the crankshaft by ramming it against its end. When the balancer is removed, inspect it before deciding to install a repair sleeve. If the design allows, inspect the condition of the rubber dampening ring to see if the material is still soft and spring-like.

Can you match timing cover seals?

If you have a willing sales rep, that person will pull out a couple of different parts numbers and you can then match to the dimensions you need. This works great on older engines and ensures you a leak-free timing cover seal repair job!

The wood distorts when you press on it, causing the sleeve to distort.

The sleeve I installed on my 318 had a wider lip on it for you to press against.

Get a speedi-sleeve. They come with an "installation tool", a collar that mates with the lip on the sleeve. You need to purchase the correct sleeve for the shaft you are repairing. If the sleeve is loose you can use a 2 part liquid epoxy to take up a small amount of clearance and retain the sleeve.

Andre68 Well-Known Member

Where can i purchase the speedi sleeve? and is there a specific part number?

Treblig Well-Known Member

I always thought that you heat the sleeve in the oven to about 250 degrees an cool the balancer in the fridge then it should slide right on. You gotta be quick so the sleeve doesn't have time to cool off. Be sure and use some good gloves so you don't get burned!!

Anytime to tap on a ring with a hammer it gets larger. Haven't u ever watched someone "size" a ring for your finger??

How to sleeve a non-automotive engine?

If you need to sleeve a non-automotive engine, measure the hub diameter and length with a caliper and go to the auto part store. If you have a willing, old-school counterman, he will pull out a couple of different parts numbers, and you can then match it up to the dimensions you need.

How to check if a dampening ring is still soft?

If the design allows, check the rubber dampening ring condition to see if the material is still soft and spring-like. You can use the end of a screwdriver for this but be gentle, you do not want to puncture it. Check to ensure there are no cracks in the harmonic absorbing material and that no pieces are missing. If it does not pass muster, save the ten dollars for the sleeve, and put it toward a new balancer.
