Clunk, Oh Oh!

The passenger side landing jack on our Keystone Cougar fifth wheel suffered a major failure last week. I was in the process of jacking the trailer off the truck when I heard and felt a loud clunk. In fact, my wife who was inside setting things up immediately looked out the window and ask “What the heck was that?”.

Disassembly and Failure Diagnoses

I thought for sure I would find a stripped bevel gear or two on the top part of the leg, but to my surprise, they looked in pretty good shape. The culprit had to be the long worm gear mechanism, but I was having a heck of a time disassembling the leg to get at it.

Finding the Replacement FW Landing Legs

So the real bad news was there is basically no easy way to change that collar nut as it is stamped in place. I decided the best course of action was a whole new leg and while I was at it I may as well change out the other side. Who knows how close it may be to failure as well. I could find absolutely no numbers or markings on the legs.

Installing the New Trailer Landing Legs

The install was a very smooth process and everything fit perfect. All I needed was an hour of time, a few wrenches and a Philips screw driver. The legs came without the feet and locking pins so I had to transfer the old ones over. No biggie though. We were soon OK to disconnect our Cougar trailer again with our shiny new landing legs.

Can you replace a gearbox without replacing the motor?

Don’t let your gearbox get that bad. The first time you hear something like this when extending the legs on your fifth wheel when unhitching, or hitching up, investigate further, immediately. Upon hearing such a noise, watch the motor as you extend the legs. If the motor assembly dances about in tune with the chunkity chunk chunk, the gearbox is probably going bad. The good news is, the gearbox can be replaced without having to replace the motor.

I would check a couple of things here. First make sure that the battery you're hooked up to is still completely charged and in good condition. Also check that the wire connections are still secured - both the power and ground attachments. If issues still persist please let me know what model jack you have and we'll go from there. 66412

Lead screw failure

Mine for instance has over 2,500 pounds of hitch weight and that’s a lot of work for a lead screw setup to do. And so it’s aware and they will fail eventually. So we’re going to talk about what you can do when they fail. Then we’re going to talk about what you can do to avoid failure and to buy as much time as possible.

Foot indestructible

So those are the four main components. Now only three of these will typically fail. The foot is pretty indestructible unless you forget to raise the landing gear. Or don’t have it up and you catch it on something maybe. But odds are that will last the life of the trailer. These other three components probably will not.

Preparation is important

So what happens if you’re prepared. Well if you’re prepared and like his was it was he couldn’t disconnect from this truck the vehicle. You know the truck and trailer were together. He’s trying to raise the trailer off the truck when the landing gear failed. So at that point it’s simply a matter of disconnecting your motor and your leg.

About levellers

Like I said the leveler, there’s more than one way to level if never-fail. I’ve got bottle jack I could use or something. But Ted these components without them you’re just you know not going to be in a very desired situation. So by being prepared we alleviate 90% of the hassle factor and you know probably 90% of the cost also.

Landing gear

If this fails it’s much more of a problem than if either one of these failed. These are much easier to replace. So let’s take a close-up of the landing gear lay here and what we can do to get the maximum life expectancy out of it. Okay let’s take a little close-up here. So if I can get this on camera. Now the top.

Have the right tools

A tool that will allow you to lubricate this 5th wheel landing gear very quickly and easily and thus buying you a lot more time out of this unit and so it doesn’t matter what type you have as long as you know the lead screw type landing gear.

Lubrication

Right here basically a piece of clear tubing and with the zerk fitting on the one end we have a cap the caps just for after use you can put this cap on and that prevents grease from coming out and making a mess and keeps it sealed. So this just slipped over that little screw. We fill the tube with grease.
