Step 1: Remove Old Glue
As you can see from the pictures, this chair has been repaired once before (at least). The old glue which has dried into thick chunks at the joints tells us this is not the way it came from the factory. This particular chair has two struts or stringers under the seat to help hold the chair seat to the chair back.
Step 2: Remove the Screws
Since the screws have been pulled from the their fastening points on the chair, we'll have to use 4 slightly thicker screws. These particular screws have a square hole in the head and require a special bit to safely remove them. I had some decking screws which have the same square hole and the square driver bit comes in the box with the screws.
Step 3: Sand and Prepare the Mating Surfaces
This is probably the most crucial step and one many people skip trying to hurry the repair. It's very important to remove as much of the old glue as possible. I actually used a small flat head screwdriver and carefully (very carefully!) chipped off the old glue. Once I got as much glue off as I could, it was time to begin sanding.
Step 4: Use Slightly Over-sized Screws
Since the original screws were torn from their mountings they would not make for a strong joint if we use them again. So I went down to Home Depot with one of the original screws and carefully matched the length to a slightly thicker screw.
Step 5: Test Fit the Pieces and Partially Screw in the New Screws
Now it's time to test fit the pieces together and give it a visual inspection to be sure it looks like a tight fit. The idea is to be sure the wood surfaces we will be gluing together soon fit as snug as we can get them. If you notice spots that don't seem to be flush, sand more off when you take the pieces apart.
Step 6: Glue and Clamp the Pieces
Use a strong wood glue such as Elmer's carpenter wood glue or something similar (some folks call this yellow glue). You want to get glue on both mating surfaces before you try to put it together. Now get a paper towel and wet it with some water, squeeze out the excess and keep it handy, you'll need it.
Step 7: Set It Aside for at Least 24 Hours
The final step is to set the chair aside for at least 24 hours to allow the glue to dry (cure) completely. Once the time has passed, it's time to put the chair in the back of the pick-up and take it back to your son and daughter-in-law's home and try it out. Mmmmm... is that a baked chicken dinner I smell!!!

Step 2: Drill Bits to the Rescue
For a fast and, more importantly, perfect repair it may be surprise you to learn you’ll need three different drill bits. First you’ll need a countersink to hide the head of the screw. Second is a drill bit that’s narrower than the shank of the screw. This one will be for the ‘pilot hole’ that goes through both the leg and the stretcher.
Step 3: Add Glue
In addition to adding a screw, it can't hurt to re-glue the joint. This step is optional, because the screw will be doing all the work.
Step 4: Drilling Procedure
First, drill the countersink in the centre of the leg (first pic). Again, ensure the counter sink is deep enough to accept the screw head, plus some additional space to cover the head with wood filler. We didn’t countersink deep enough on our first try to allow space for the filler, so had to go back in again.
Step 5: A Perfect Repair
This is Hub’s best kept secret, but now we’re sharing it with you! Switch to the third and last drill bit. Line it up with the chair leg, then use a piece of green tape to mark the depth of the leg. The marker will stop you short of drilling into the stretcher.
Step 6: Strengthen the Repair
Like a mentioned earlier, the screw is doing all the work. However, now’s the time to add some wood glue before inserting the screw, if you choose to do so. A glue syringe and some painters tape is needed for this step.
Step 7: Pipe Clamp
Use two blocks of wood at either end to protect the chair from the pipe clamp. Tighten the pipe clamp against the blocks.
