Can you splice a boat transducer cable?

The transducer manufacturers will not honor your waranty if you cut the cable. If you do cut it follow what the previous post said, solder and heat shrink to keep the water and moisture out.

Can you cut and join transducer cable?

"Don't trim the fishfinder's transducer cable to fit your boat. If it's too long, coil it. Cutting the cable will interfere with the accuracy of the fishfinder's signal. Some manufacturers supply cable if you need a longer cable (check with our Product Information Department at 800-568-0319)."

Can you splice a transducer?

you should be good to go. Solder the splice using electronics flux solder, using shrink sleeve each wire and then over the entire bundle. Try the alumiminum foil, but cover the whole splice in shrink wrap. I have a fish finder with a sliced transducer cable.

Can a Garmin transducer cable be spliced?

It came with an Airmar P66 x-ducer, but I already had a P79 in the hull from my old Lowrance. So, I cut off the Plug on the P66 and soldered the cable from the P79. I get a "sonar turned off" message on the machine. Garmin tech says you absolutely cannot cut/splice a transducer cable.

Can transducers be repaired?

Damaged or scratched cases are replaced to make your transducer look like new. Every transducer is calibrated and tested before it is returned. Transducers are repaired at a flat rate with no hidden charges.

Can a transducer cable be shortened?

How long are transducer cables?

The transducer cables are normally about 20 feet in length.

Can you shorten a Garmin transducer cable?

6-pin transducers, still under warranty, should not be cut to fit in to an 8 pin wire block adapter. Cutting a cable when an adapter solution is available will void the warranty of the transducer. In addition, 6-pin transducer extension cables are no longer available.

What is a transducer cable?

A cable extension transducer has many names; string pot, draw wire sensor, string encoder, cable actuated position sensor and more... All of these terms are used to describe a type of position sensor which is used to measure linear position through the use of a flexible cable and a string loaded spool.

I allowed the transducer cable on my Lowrance depth finder to get caught in the trolling motor bracket. Dumb! It cut through the outer cover and through most of the cable.

The wire consists of an insulated inner wire and an outer sheath/braided wire. Cut the wire in half at the damaged area. Strip back an inch or so of the outer cable. Pull the braided sheath wire back. strip the insulation off both ends of the inner wire. Slide on a piece of heat shrink tubing before connecting the wire together.

What is the kHz of a transducer?

Most of the old transducers were either 200 kHz or 210 kHz but there were also some other frequencies used.#N#If your old transducer is a 210 kHz it won’t work at all or not accurately with a newer 200 kHz display.

Do you need a transducer with a depth sounder?

Transducer are generally matched to the depth sounder, with the length of cable part of the equation.#N#I expect you will need to use the cable and transducer which comes with the new sounder head unit.#N#Ancient cable should not be relied on if it's been in the boat a long time.

Is the length of a cable critical?

Unlike on radar, the length of cable is not critical here. The reason is, depth sounder works with sound where the speed of the signal is negligible in comparison with the speed of the electric signal going through the cable. The age and condition of the cable is something what has to be given some consideration though.

Is a radar cable a transmission line?

It is completely unlike a radar cable. It's not really working as a transmission line, it mostly looks like so many pF/m connected across the transducer. Fiddling with it can send it off tune, greatly reducing the sensitivity of the sounder.
