Introduction
Sometimes the cable starts peeling just at that place where it meets the AC Adapter. I've met too many people that throw away their chargers because of this. It takes time and patience but repair is possible!
Step 3
Look at the line that goes though the charger. This is all glued with some super adhesive that prevents you from just taking it apart.
Step 4
With a flat headed screwdriver start separating both plastic faces from the charger. You need to use a little force to do this.
Step 7
Grab the small plastic piece that attaches the cables to the AC charger.
Step 9
Take the cable that connects to your mac book and carefully peel it off with a knife or a wire stripper.
Step 11
Proceed to solder the black cable from the AC charger to the outer wire of your Macbook connector.
Step 12
Cover up with electrical tape the rest the white and black/outer cable you just soldered.
Step 1: Issues
Getting to school and needing a computer, I set to the task of figuring out exactly what was wrong and how to fix it. My first impressions was that there was absolutely no solder on either the cables that were ripped from the back of the plug, or the plug.
Step 2: Not So Simple
No stranger to solder, I tried soldering wires straight to the plug to no avail. No matter how hot I got the plug, it was too polished and the solder just wouldn't stick. It was more difficult then trying to solder something to the bottom of a can of soda.
Step 3: Figuring Out Connections
So the first thing after cutting the new cable (which was left over from some old component), was to figure out which prongs of the plug went to which wires.
Step 4: One Last Thing Before We Put Everything Together..
Right before I started soldering the cables together, I noticed that if I'd kept going, the power adapter would have had a large exposed side. To keep this from happening, I decided to drill a hole right in the center of the faceplate for the adapter.
Step 5: Putting Everything Together
Now that everything was ready, it was just a matter of getting everything set up, soldered and adding finishing touches.
Step 6: Wrapping Up
Snap the faceplate back in place and enjoy your new plug. If your plug doesn't have a snap, a little extra tape on the outside will work just fine. I did my first power check not plugged into my computer. I plugged it into the wall, and ensured the "I'm plugged in correctly" light came on.
Step 1: Strip the Wires
Use the blade to separate the wires. Next strip the ends with the cutting parts of the pliers. Only use light pressure or you’ll start cutting the individual wires.
Step 2: The Inner Coil
Cut out a section of coat hanger wire. This wire is very close in diameter to the pin that makes the connection at the receiving side. Wrap a paper clip around it until it’s is too difficult to bend by hand. Then make a thimble out of the coat hanger to further push the wire around. The last little end of wire can be coiled with the pliers.
Step 3: Insulation
Here’s where the straw comes in. Cut a section of straw down the side. Roll it between your fingers until it reduces in diameter. Place it over the inner coil which is still on the section of coat hanger wire.
Step 4: Outer Coil
Wrap a second paper clip around the straw and inner coil. Use the multi-tool to even the coil out so it’s the lengths match. Cut a new section of straw since this one gets mangled in the process.
Step 5: Put It Together
Crimp the paper clips onto the wires. Place the straw insulation around the inner coil. After it's together, trim off the excess insulation.
Step 6: Gum Grip
Yes you can chew the gum but, I think a little water is better for this application. Wash any powder off the gum and kneed it until it looks like regular old chewed gum. Form it around the plug and let it sit. Make sure it doesn't interfere with any other connections. As it dries it will harden; supporting the wires and serving as a grip.
