Ok, I have done some minor antler fixes in the past but nothing to this extent. I would very much appreciate some help here. I have a customer who shot this very nice whitetail, but as you can see, it was a fighter.

Paul B Active Member

Its not to hard of a job, but the time involved, you could probably get the deer mounted faster. As Bucknut said, Fix It works good, nice base color for bone. I have a few "junk racks" I keep just for this reason, tine replacement.

Matt Active Member

Thanks Haffs, Amy check out that tutorial and let me know if you have any questions. I do a lot of beam repair these days, but this one was a bit extreme.

Mac McLane Member

Just like Matt, I am doing more antler repair. In an area where shotgun is the primary used firearm you get antlers shot off. I will repair a couple of different ways but the way I prefer is to add real antler vs rebuilding completely. I collect sheds and antlers from guys who no longer want them and will cut tines that closely match existing.

Jerry Huffaker Well-Known Member

We get 25.00 per inch. I mold and cast all of our tines out of plastic these days, don't use epoxy puddys anymore.

Jacob N. Member

I charge $10 an inch, but I have a min of $45. Just because it is as easy to replace a point that is 10" as it is to replace one that is 5". Like Jerry I cast my points and replace with plastic. To me it is easier to hide the transition that way. I have used real antler before but that way makes it alot harder to get it to look good.

Thank you SO much for advice y'all! That tutorial was amazing and very helpful. Awesome job, Matt!! If you can recreate an entire side, surely I can do this project! The fix it looks like the ticket. I like sculpting and having the freedom to shape things how I like.

Who is the antler repair guy?

Mention the name Tom Sexton to anyone who knows him even casually, and chances are you'll get a long response from that person about what a great human being the man is. During his long career he's helped literally thousands of taxidermists become better artists in their own right, and he's also helped hundreds of sportsmen and antler collectors with his amazing works of perfection. Truly, Tom Sexton is a one of a kind in the whitetail industry!

How many points did Tom get from his antlers?

One such set of antlers received by Tom had 46 individual points. The heavy rack had been sawed off the live buck out of necessity after it reached full growth due to the animal's inability to lift its head.

What percentage of Tom's business is repairing whitetails?

About 70 percent of Tom's business consists of repairing broken tines and main beams on trophy whitetails taken by hunters. He often replaces entire left or right sides that have been snapped off in rutting battles. Though some hunters prefer leaving a buck's broken rack as it was when harvested, most favor restoring the rack to its original beauty.

What year did Brian Andrews arrow a 26 point buck?

Without question, one of the most challenging projects in Tom's multi-faceted career involved the recent replication of the Brian Andrews buck. On Nov. 14, 2003, then 16-year-old Brian Andrews arrowed an incredible 26-point buck near his home in Independence, Iowa. Brian's buck became an overnight sensation. With a score of 253 1/8 non-typical points, it became a new state-record non-typical by bow. Sadly, Brian's mounted trophy of a lifetime was stolen from his home in June 2004. (See the September 2004 issue for Brian's complete story. Also see the September 2008 issue for an update on Brian's stolen rack. To date, the rack has not been recovered.)

How to make a paint look brown?

Use a drop of burnt umber, and smear it out thinly on your palette. Use the same flat hard bristled brush and barely tip it with umber. Jab the very tip of the brush on to the painted surface in a pattern consistent with the brown you see on the other tines. Clean the brush every two or three jabs. Once the umber is in place, use a soft, flat hair bristle brush and lightly stroke the painted area to blend and smooth the paint. Keep the brush clean. Stroke one side, turn over and clean. This will help keep from turning the colors “muddy”.
