I made sure there wasn't dirt between the jaws or the slide rocking on the body. So I disassembled it and am confused as to how they work.

Never dissembled one but I had to re set mine several times. A bump or debris can throw the needle out quarter of a turn or more. I use a thin and narrow piece of metal shim stock some .005" think. Back the jaws some inch or two, stick the shim until it catches the little gear. This will free the gear from riding the rack. In this way you can play until you get the needle at the 12 o'clock position. Make sure to use some alcohol to clean the rack and that there is not grease or dirt stuck at the valley of the teeth.
