I would have to think about it more but what comes to mind you could put to small sheet metal patches over it. One on the outside and one on the inside ans screw them together. It wont be the best looking.

Iron-on patches are still available and will probably work, if you have an iron. I don't. Put one on each side to stop any fraying. Any heavy fabric could be stitched (use carpet thread) to the bag as well. You'd want to finish the edges to keep the bag or the fabric from fraying.

If the bag's like mine, two-layer heavy canvas, it may work. Personally, I'd stitch it in addition to ironing, but I tend to be a) handy with a needle (guess who does all clothing repair in this household?) and b) really into overkill.

Totally OT, but tell me about it. My favorite gardening pants are stitched across both knees, the rear end, one calf where I caught them and tore the pair, and right at the zipper where my usually-spread legs outside ripped the seam.
