As a person who does 150-200 roof repairs per year, I will have to disagree most heartily with this advice. Many of the repairs that I do on asphalt shingle roofs have already been repaired with silicone. I then have to remove the silicone and clean the area, then install a caulk that is compatible with asphalt.
