Step 1: Cut a Piece of Heat Shrink Tubing
I have some heat shrink tubing that is about 5/16 inch in diameter. It is too small to slip over the USB connector on the cable, also too small to slip over the 30 pin connector. I cut a piece about 5/8 inch long and slit it open.
Step 3: Tape the Tubing
I used common frosted cellophane tape to keep the heat shrink tubing wrapped somewhat tightly around the cable.
Step 4: Use a Heat Source
I used a heat gun to shrink the tubing while covered with tape. The tape did not melt and the heat shrink tubing worked as if it had never been slit. The heat shrink tubing adhered to itself and made a fairly rigid strain relief, as well as shielding the break in the outer cover.
Step 5: Oops!
In my effort to shrink the tubing as much as possible, the white plastic fitting on the 30 pin connector began to open along a center seam. There is a little wiggle. I do not think it is a problem, but I may press some epoxy glue into the opening.

Next we stand the plug on its side, with the exposed metal part up in the air. The exposed metal is the bit you want to hold onto so you don't cut your fingers.
Step 2: Get to the Wires & Prepare
Even though we've battled past the outer casing, there's more moulded rubbish to get past. For me a bit of brute force is all that was needed your, mileage may vary. Once you've got the the wires out, cut them away from the white inside piece.
Step 3: Tin & Solder
I'm not going to teach you how to solder here, that is covered in excellent detail elsewhere. There's no point in doubling up that information. The fist thing to do is to tin the wires, making them much much easier to work with later. For those who aren't aware tinning is applying a thin coating of solder on the outside of the wire.
Step 4: Put It All Back Together Again
You stripped the plug apart, now you just need to put it back together again. Its exactly the same in reverse. Re-assemble the white insides and re-insert them into the metal container.
