After looking around a little I think they're probably Piantedosi basswood spoon oars. Should I try to find some basswood, or would spruce be good enough?

I imagine spruce with G-flex epoxy would work. Give them a few heavy trials before rowing anywhere where you risk losing your life or boat if one breaks...
