If your valuable canvas painting has been torn apart, this guide will show step by step on how to repair a torn canvas using simple tools in less time.
Step 1 How to Repair a Torn Canvas
Prepare a workstation by taping down a clear trash bag on a flat surface.
Step 2
Using a pair of scissors, cut a piece of unprimed canvas large enough to cover the tear.
Step 3
The front side of the torn canvas needs to be facing down to apply the first coat of gesso acrylic paint.
Step 5
Place the scrap on top of the tear and smooth it out as much as possible.
Step 7
Once it's dry, flip the torn canvas to the front side and seal in with approximately two coats of gesso acrylic paint to cover the tear completely.
Patching at Your Sewing Machine
If your damage was caused by external forces, you can patch just the outside of your canvas using the same material the cover is made from. If your hole was caused by chafing, you should patch the inside of the canvas with a chafe-resistant material like Shelter-Rite ® vinyl or Sur Last ® to keep the damage from happening again.
Patching in Place
We often hear from customers that have a rip in a bimini top or an awning and don’t want to take the fabric down to take it to their sewing machine. If you want a quick, no-sew repair, try Tear-Aid ® Fabric Repair Patches (Type A). These adhesive-backed patches will create a solid, quick patch as long as they are properly installed.

1. Assess the damage
It is important to begin by assessing the extent of the damage to the canvas. I will be repairing a portrait on canvas that has about a two-inch rip on the top right. This happened when a stand was accidentally knocked over and the corner went right through the canvas as it was leaning up against the wall.
2. Apply the patch
The secret to patching is to do it from the back of the canvas, not the front. It is actually not that difficult, nor do you need materials that you are unlikely to have in your studio or at home already. The canvas does not need to be taken off the stretcher – it is actually easier to repair a canvas when it is stretched as it is stable and taut.
3. Glue the patch
Apply the PVA to the canvas patch and make sure the fibres are flush with the original canvas. (If you are using a primed canvas patch, which I would recommend, make sure the primed side faces the back of your damaged canvas). Press down lightly and make sure no PVA escapes through the tear on the other side of the canvas.
4. Let the patch dry
Rest the canvas painted side down. Place a weight on the back of the patch to hold everything in place and leave the PVA to set for at least 24 hours. When it has set, turn the canvas over and the front of the painting should look something like image 4. As you can see, the white primer on the canvas patch is showing through the tear.
6. The final work
When viewed close up, some of the tear is still visible, but I am pretty happy with the overall results when it is viewed from a distance. I hope you have success with your repairs too.
