FYI, this is in regards to a 60's house - more "retro" than old, but I wan't sure where else to put this.

I'd try wood putty in the damaged sections, then sand the whole door to get the varnish off. Luan doors still have those little grooves when you paint. I'd see if I could find some thick stuff to coat the door with, maybe some kind of gesso. Gesso is a thick primer artists use to pretreat canvas.
