Make sure all the loose, proud, and flaky bits of plaster have been removed, especially around the edges. Give the area a good brush down to remove any dust, then give it a wet down with a brush or spray. Mix up a small amount of Bonding coat plaster, then brush some pva over the whole area.

Many thanks for your reply. The depth of the broken off plaster is about 2-3mm. So just to clarify would I use the bonding plaster to completely level the missing parts of the plaster with the rest of the wall and then skim over the entire wall with the multi finish?

Spot on, yes, but don't forget to use the pva though, and plaster onto it while it's still wet/tacky.
